Many people receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, but receiving Christ is only the beginning of the Christian journey.
A new believer needs to grow.
Jesus did not command His disciples simply to make converts. He commanded them to make disciples.
Matthew 28:19 says:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”
A disciple is a person who is learning to follow Jesus.
Salvation Is the Beginning
When a person believes in Jesus Christ, they receive new life from God.
But just as a newborn child needs food, care, instruction, and an environment in which to grow, a new believer needs spiritual nourishment and guidance.
This is why discipleship is essential.
You cannot expect a new believer to automatically understand everything about prayer, the Bible, faith, the Holy Spirit, spiritual growth, Christian character, witnessing, or Kingdom living.
These things must be learned.
Discipleship Produces Spiritual Growth
The Apostle Peter instructed believers:
“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” — 1 Peter 2:2
God wants His children to grow.
Spiritual growth involves learning God’s Word and allowing that Word to transform the way we think, speak, make decisions, and live.
Discipleship helps us move from spiritual infancy toward maturity.
It teaches us not only what we believe, but also how to live what we believe.
Discipleship Helps Us Live the Spirit-Filled Life
The Christian life was never designed to be lived through human strength alone.
The Holy Spirit has been given to believers to help us live the life God has called us to live.
Paul writes in Galatians 5:16:
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
Learning to walk in the Spirit is part of spiritual maturity.
We need to understand the Holy Spirit, learn to yield to Him, know God’s Word, develop spiritual disciplines, and allow the character of Christ to be formed in us.
This is why intentional discipleship matters.
Discipleship Turns Believers Into Disciple-Makers
One of the greatest purposes of discipleship is multiplication.
Jesus discipled twelve men.
Those disciples went on to disciple others.
Paul told Timothy:
“And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” — 2 Timothy 2:2
Notice the multiplication:
Paul → Timothy → faithful people → others.
This is how discipleship spreads.
A mature disciple should eventually become someone who can help others grow.
You Don’t Have to Wait
You don’t need to wait until you know everything before beginning your discipleship journey.
Start where you are.
Learn.
Grow.
Ask questions.
Study the Scriptures.
Pray.
Follow the Holy Spirit.
Apply what you are learning.
Then help someone else grow.
