The Christian life is more than trying harder to be a good person.
God has given believers something greater: the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence, an emotion, or a religious experience. He is the Spirit of God who lives in believers and empowers them to live the life God has called them to live.
This is what we mean by the Spirit-filled life.
The Holy Spirit Is God’s Gift to the Believer
Jesus promised His disciples that the Father would give them the Holy Spirit.
In John 14:16, Jesus said:
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.”
The Holy Spirit is our Helper.
He does not come merely for special moments in church. He comes to live with us and help us live for God every day.
The Spirit-Filled Life Is a Daily Life
Being Spirit-filled should not be limited to Sunday worship services.
The Holy Spirit wants to influence every area of our lives.
He wants to guide us in:
- Our relationships
- Our decisions
- Our work
- Our families
- Our finances
- Our ministry
- Our prayer life
- Our understanding of Scripture
- Our character
- Our service to others
Paul says in Ephesians 5:18:
“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.”
The expression points us toward an ongoing experience of being filled and influenced by the Holy Spirit.
Walking in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 says:
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
There are competing influences in the Christian life.
The flesh pulls us toward the desires of our human nature.
The Spirit leads us according to the will of God.
The Spirit-filled life means learning to yield to the Holy Spirit rather than allowing the flesh to control our lives.
This is not accomplished simply by human determination.
We need the help and power of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit Produces a Different Kind of Life
When we yield to the Holy Spirit, His work becomes visible in our lives.
Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit:
love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
These qualities are evidence of spiritual transformation.
The Spirit-filled life changes not only what happens in our church meetings but also how we live when nobody is watching.
The Spirit Empowers Us to Witness
The Holy Spirit also empowers believers to fulfill the mission of Christ.
Jesus told His disciples in Acts 1:8:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”
We are not called to fulfill the Great Commission through human strength alone.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to testify about Jesus, serve others, exercise spiritual gifts, and participate in God’s mission.
